Nearly 300 million people suffer from depression, according to the World Health Organization but philanthropist, and co-founder of TMS Health Solutions, Ara Chackerian says there could be a more cost-efficient and effective approach to treating the disease: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
Depression is a neurological disorder. The frontal region of the left and right cerebral hemispheres (also called frontal cortex) is affected. With transcranial magnetic stimulation, also referred to as TMS, a magnetic coil is held near the patient’s skull to stimulate the cerebral cortex. The coil creates magnetic pulses, similar to that produced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As the device produces low electrical currents in specific areas, the activity of brain cells are changed. Ara Chackerian, an entrepreneur that invested in, then developed the first center for TMS therapy, and then expanded to seven other locations in California, says it’s one of the most effective non-invasive therapies for depression today. Chackerian says no anesthesia is required with TMS therapy, and patients say it isn’t painful. While the therapy is only FDA-approved for depression treatments, clinical studies show progress with treating other chronic and neurological diseases, like multiple sclerosis.
Almost two and one-half million people suffer from multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system. In fact, it’s considered to be one of the leading causes of severe non-traumatic disability in adults. Clinical studies are looking into ways transcranial magnetic stimulation can reduce the pain related to the disease. You can visit linkedin for more.
