New York-based attorney Jeremy Goldstein recently hosted a charity event for the organization Fountain House. Tickets to the event, which included a professionally designed meal and a variety of vintage wines, sold for $5000 apiece. The proceeds from the gala will help Fountain House fund its New York operations.
The Fountain House is an organization that assists people living with severe mental illnesses lead normal lives. The organization was founded in 1944 by a group of people with mental illness as a way to help each other. In 1948, the organization purchased a property in New York. On this property was a large fountain, which the group came to see as symbolic of their charitable pursuits.
Fountain House operates by providing opportunities to individuals with mental illness who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. By helping clients engage in the community, Fountain House is able to encourage clients to lead normal and productive lives. By working with local communities, Fountain House hopes to change the common perceptions of mental illness. Fountain House also helps fund mental health research.
Using the same model they used in 1944, Fountain House is able to ensure that clients are involved in the local community. This allows clients to earn diplomas, gain employment, and learn skills. It also allows them to form friendships and relationships in the community. Clients work in areas like horticulture, communications, education, and culinary arts. 99 percent of Fountain House’s clients are also guaranteed a place to sleep at night.
Jeremy Goldstein attended New York University School of Law, where he graduated with a law degree. He then went on to work for a law firm in New York City.
